SANDE Youth Project

SANDE is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that enriches lives in Austin, Texas, through Culture, Cuisine and Community.

OUR MISSION

SANDE is dedicated to increasing awareness about the rich culinary and cultural heritage of African Americans and to combating childhood hunger, obesity and disease by teaching basic cooking skills and nutrition to at-risk young people and their families.

OUR PROGRAM

SANDE is a mobile cooking program that uses food, heritage, and community mentors to instill 12 Core Values in youngsters in the areas of Spirit, Attitude, Nutrition, Deeds, and Effort (SANDE). We support the First Lady’s Let’s Move Faith and Communities initiative.

OUR VISION

We strive to nourish families the old-fashioned way: at the kitchen table where proficiency, morals, self-esteem and respect for the community are passed on one meal at a time.  In our nurturing classes and activities, youngsters will discover, celebrate and integrate food and heritage into their lives so they can thrive in the world around them.

OUR PARTNERS

Through a community partnership with the University of Texas -Austin’s Division of Diversity and Community Engagement, we offer nutrition and cooking activities at selected sites around the city where children and adults  learn about the food they eat, from seed to plate so they are empowered to make better choices.

SANDE uses food and culture to inspire leadership and promote community spirit. SANDE accomplishes this vision through the following activities:

  1. Children’s Picnic and Good Food Fair

  2. Exhibits of important artifacts, including rare African-American cookbooks and photographs

  3. Artist-led workshops and demonstrations

  4. Structured after-school activities for children

  5. Adult workshops

  6. Internships

  7. Diverse cultural food celebrations
